Interview with Timo Diedrichsen

Nordmann News spoke with Timo Diedrichsen, Sustainability Coordinator at Nordmann, about the new REACH regulation on microplastics and its impact on companies.

Timo, the new REACH Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 introduces additional requirements for synthetic polymer microparticles. What does this mean?

Timo: The regulation does not aim to ban microplastics altogether, but rather to reduce the risk of them being released into the environment. It targets intentionally added synthetic polymer microparticles (SPM) that are solid, non-biodegradable, and insoluble in water. These may occur either as individual particles or as a continuous surface coating on other materials. To fall under the scope of the regulation, they must be 5 mm or smaller in any dimension, or up to 15 mm in length if their length-to-diameter ratio exceeds 3. Secondary microplastics, such as those produced by abrasion, are not covered.

In your opinion, what are the most important changes for Nordmann and its customers? Which industries are affected?

Timo: The most important change for Nordmann and its customers is the need to ensure regulatory compliance throughout the supply chain. This includes adapting our CLP labelling and safety data sheets (SDS) to reflect the legally required information on the correct use and disposal of products containing synthetic polymer microparticles.

Industries particularly affected include Plastics, CASE (Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants, Elastomers), Life Sciences as well as others where microplastics are intentionally added to formulations.

How do you at Nordmann ensure that the supply chain is informed and involved accordingly?

Timo: We are currently gathering relevant information from our suppliers to ensure that they are aware of their responsibilities and implement the necessary changes. Coordination is handled centrally by our HSEQ & Sustainability department. In close collaboration with our sales teams, we are making sure that all relevant information is passed on efficiently and transparently.

Of course, we also take the time to answer questions from our suppliers and customers. This is a new situation for all of us, and we believe that working together is key to finding the best possible solutions.

Exchange, transparency, and best practice are important keywords here. So please get in touch with us. We look forward to talking to you.
