Selenium Dioxide

Selenium Dioxide is commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry as a reagent to oxidize aldehydes and ketones to carboxylic acids, and preparation of selenides via reduction. Selenium dioxide is also used as a catalyst in other various reactions. In its solid form, it appears as a white or slightly pink crystalline powder with a nauseating smell. Extreme exposure or ingestion of Selenium Dioxide can be toxic and special care should be taken when handling.
