Dietary fiber: why is it so important for the human body?

We know that dietary fiber is good for digestion and essential to our health – but what exactly is it, and how does it work?

The recommended daily intake of fiber ranges from 20 to 25 grams, with the German Nutrition Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung, or DGE) even advising a full 30 grams of dietary fiber each day, balanced by sufficient fluid intake. However, since modern diets often fall short of these recommendations, Nordmann distributes a variety of products that can help provide additional support:

Dietary fiber
  • Sunfiber® (hydrolyzed guar gum from Taiyo)
  • XiaPure® (black chia seeds from Taiyo)
  • Carepsyllium® (psyllium husk powder from Caremoli)
  • Hi-Maize® 260 (resistant starch Type 2 from Ingredion)
  • Novelose® 330 (resistant starch Type 3 from Ingredion)
  • Sustagrain® (whole grain barley from Ingredion)
  • Gamma-cyclodextrin (from Zibo)

What fiber is

Dietary fiber refers to the fibrous parts of plant foods. These carbohydrates cannot be broken down into digestible sugar molecules, are either soluble (for example pectin or beta-glucans) or insoluble (for example cellulose,) and can be found, for example, in nuts, seeds, whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes.

What fiber does

Insoluble dietary fiber binds water, which causes food to thicken and swell after it is ingested. Food remains in the stomach longer and promotes a more lasting sense of satiety.

The increase in volume puts greater pressure on the body’s intestinal wall, which stimulates peristalsis. In turn, this reduces transit time as food makes its way through the gut.

The soluble fiber in food is fermented by bacteria when it reaches the large intestine, creating the basis for a healthy microbiome.

For these reasons, as well as its low energy density of around 2 calories per gram, dietary fiber is an important component of a balanced, wholesome diet and a valuable contributor in the context of weight management and reduction. The positive impact that dietary fiber has on blood sugar, cholesterol levels, the cardiovascular system and intestinal and dental health has been a topic of research and discussion for some time.
