Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) for clean drinking water

Globally, drinking water is subject to strict regulations and testing in order to ensure its quality and purity. All products that may come into contact with drinking water, therefore, must comply with strict rules and regulations. In Germany, the German Environment Agency (UBA) coordinates with the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) to assess the toxicological safety and suitability of raw materials for contact with drinking water. The current interim recommendations for TPE will be withdrawn on March 1, 2025, after which the new KTW-BWGL (3rd amendment) will have binding effect.

To meet these revised requirements, Nordmann partner MARFRAN is now offering a newly developed product family of TPE compounds: MARFRAN E KPW.

Based on styrene block copolymers, these compounds meet all the requirements of the new KTW-BWGL guidelines for cold water (23 °C) and hot water (60 °C). The compounds are fully transparent, plasticizer-free and suitable for both injection molding and extrusion applications.

Drinking water hoses made with MARFRAN E KPW provide excellent kink resistance as well as smooth and even surfaces while also being easy to color  and bonding exceptionally well to polypropylene.

The new TPE compounds range in hardness from 50-95 Shore A and their low density (under 0.9 g/ccm) and elongation at break of at least 800% make them ideal for creating complex geometries while offering significant material savings. Compared to vulcanized rubber options, in fact, using Marfran TPE offers manufacturers potential savings of up to 30% in production. There are also no disposal costs involved, as these TPEs are 100% reusable.
