Sustainable partnerships

Packaging has a major impact on global sustainability. Nordmann is not only researching environmentally friendly alternatives for plastic packaging, but has also been marketing pigment chips for biodegradable packaging since 2021 with its partner Mifar.

Mifar focuses its strong R&D efforts on developing sustainable packaging solutions for food. With its compostable pigment chips (Compostable Chips), Mifar offers an innovative product range that is biodegradable and also fully compatible with compostable printing media. Together with BASF Colors & Effects (now Sun Chemical), Mifar was able to develop pigment chips based on nitrocellose and that are also largely free of heavy metals – meaning they have no negative impact on the composting process. To ensure compostability, developing these products also involved an adjustment to the color index because conventional pigments did not meet biodegradability criteria.

Mifar’s Compostable Chips offer customers the ability to produce exactly the amount of finished product they need. Since it only takes 90 or 120 minutes to incorporate the pigments using a Cowles dispersing disk, it’s possible to make small batches ranging from 100 kilograms to one ton. The pigments can be stored in 20-kilogram packages to minimize storage risks. Mifar’s Compostable Chips are TÜV-certified and 100% compliant with the European EN 13432 standard.

Distributed in Europe (excl. France, Portugal, Spain)
