Factice – once a rubber substitute, now a functional additive based on renewable raw materials

In the first half of the 19th century, factice was developed at almost the same time as vulcanization was discovered – and because rubber was so expensive then, factice served as a cheap alternative. The French term for this rubber substitute – “caoutchouc factice” – is what gave the product its name in 1858. Following years of technological advancements, factice is now being used more as a processing aid.
