“Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs) for Drinking Water Applications: Sustainability meets functionality”

Drinking water is one of the world’s most important resources, which is why authorities around the world have implemented strict regulations to keep it clean and consumable. One of our customers, a fittings manufacturer, was looking for sustainable elastomeric materials to meet today’s requirements and ensure that water is used responsibly.

What was required?

In addition to having a premium look and design, the product needed to offer superior functionality, robustness and anti-limescale properties.

Specifications required the materials to:

  • be PVC and latex-free
  • exhibit minimal odor and emissions to comply with the most stringent water regulations
  • be 100% recyclable, in order to support a circular economy

Another critical parameter was chemical resistance toward various cleaning agents, ensuring long product life and performance. The product also had to be easy to repair and replace.

The solution?  Marfran E DRW HC and HOF.

MARFRAN E DRW HC and HOF are two product families that successfully address these challenges. Available in a hardness range from 30-95 ShA, these TPE materials feature densities lower than 0.9 g/ccm, facilitating lightweight solutions and giving designers full design freedom. Compared to thermoset rubber, these TPEs can yield up to 30% cost savings in each production cycle. The materials are also 100% recyclable, meaning zero disposal cost.

“Taking care of our world and its resources is one of the key pillars in Nordmann’s corporate strategy. For this reason, we’re excited about what MARFRAN can offer for drinking water applications – how they can help our customers dispense drinking water with optimum efficiency and also maintain superior quality long-term. Our customers truly see the value of having a sustainable material that provides the kind of high-level functionality they’re looking for,” says Stefan Karis, Senior Technical Sales and Product Manager Thermoplastics at Nordmann.
