Cancarb: Sixth production unit goes into operation

Cancarb is a leader in the development, manufacture and global distribution of medium thermal carbon black. The company’s Thermax®-brand carbon blacks are sold worldwide to deliver solutions for the rubber industry and other manufacturing sectors. Cancarb's facility in Medicine Hat, Alberta (Canada) uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure Thermax® Medium Thermal Carbon Black products are not only of the highest quality and consistency, but are also manufactured efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner.
Greater capacity, fewer CO2 emissions
The new production line at the Medicine Hat plant in Alberta will add on 9,000 metric tons of capacity starting in February 2021. This will boost Cancarb's total production volume to 54,000 tons per year.
The new facility, "Unit 6", was built according to the same specifications and operating parameters of the existing five production units and will be used to produce Cancarb’s Thermax® N990 and specialty grades Ultra-Pure®, Stainless® and the new low PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) type, whose introduction is planned for the second quarter 2021.
The new unit will carry forward Cancarb's current sustainable and environmentally sound production practices in terms of particle emissions (close to zero) as well as increased power generation from waste heat. The goal is to keep Medicine Hat supplied with electricity while also reducing CO2 emissions. Using electricity generated from its own waste heat, Cancarb is already reducing 0.53 metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) per megawatt hour with its five existing production units - a figure that will increase with the sixth unit.
