Monomers for 3D printing resins

3D printing is a rapidly growing type of technology that is finding its way into many fields, including medical solutions, plastics processing and prototype construction. With products such as VISIOMER® and MERACRYL™, Nordmann partners Evonik Operations GmbH and Röhm GmbH each supply innovative monomers that are optimally suited to use with these technologies.

Methacrylate monomers are used to produce printable resins, which then in turn are used in both established printing processes (e.g. Stereolithography (STL/SLA), Digital Light Processing (DLP), Mask Stereolithography (MSLA)/Liquid Crystal Display-Stereolithography (LCD-SLA)) and novel 3D printing techniques.

Added value for customers

The demands on 3D printed materials are high and vary from application to application. For many, properties such as stability, hardness, chemical resistance and flexibility are what play a major role. For others, it is important that the printable resins used are highly reactive but will not shrink during curing. Customers are also looking for low vapor pressure and eco-friendly GHS labeling.

With methacrylate monomers such as VISIOMER® and MERACRYL™, Nordmann partners Evonik Operations GmbH and Röhm GmbH supply the products that meet these requirements and can specifically target the properties of printing resins and printed materials.

Product overview

  • Monofunctional methacrylate monomers such as MERACRYL™ HEMA 98, VISIOMER® Terra IBOMA and VISIOMER® THFMA are well-suited to use as reactive diluent. These are ideal for dissolving oligomers and other formulation components, as well as for adjusting the viscosity of printing resins.
  • Various di- or trifunctional methacrylate monomers can be used as crosslinkers: VISIOMER® EGDMA is particularly suitable for increasing the mechanical strength of printed materials. VISIOMER® HEMATMDI is characterized by very low shrinkage. VISIOMER® 1,6-HDDMA is used when printed materials are meant to retain a certain level of flexibility.
