Kraton seminar in Belgrade

Kraton™ Polymers, partner of Nordmann Serbia, hosts seminar on asphalt developments.

Nordmann organized a seminar on cost-effective technologies for modern asphalt pavements that took place in Serbia on 30 November 2018. The event proved to be a good opportunity for discussing recycling, circular economy issues and highly-modified bitumen for long-lasting road asset management. The successful and fruitful seminar brought together road owners, entrepreneurs and scientists to jointly make progress in the development of cost-effective future technologies.

The key parameters for a future, effective recycling concept are the availability of recycled asphalt (RA), a functioning industrial recycling process and standard technical specifications. It was determined that all stakeholders have a role to play in making sustainable solutions happen. For example, road owners have asphalt that can be recycled and reused. Contractors should also invest in the future and scientists should design specifications that offer the best value for money.

The successful and fruitful seminar brought together road owners, entrepreneurs and scientists.

Polymers by Kraton

Kraton Polymers presented a new concept at the seminar: Highly Modified Asphalt (HiMA). It is based on a 7-8% addition of SBS to bitumen, doubling the SBS content compared to current solutions. Such a binder offers excellent resistance to rutting, excellent cracking resistance and longer road life. HiMA durability reduces maintenance costs and traffic disruption, HiMA can also reduce the thickness of the pavement, what has positive effect on construction costs.

The new technology has been extensively tested: in Kraton laboratories for optimum binder properties, by Delft Technical University for asphalt mix properties and in field studies by the National Center of Asphalt Technologies (NCAT) in the USA. Since then, HiMA technology has been used for all types of road construction solutions (asphalt concrete, SMA, porous asphalt, mastic asphalt, emulsion technologies) and in various climate zones and regions - from Alaska to South America, Europe, Australia and Middle East.

Well attended: many guests from the asphalt industry took part in the Nordmann Seminar
